Induction Motor (Asynchronous Motor)
An Asynchronous Motor, commonly referred to as an induction motor, is one of the most widely used types of electric motors in both industrial and household applications. It operates on the principle of electromagnetic induction, where the rotating magnetic field produced by the stator induces current in the rotor. This induced current in the rotor, in turn, creates its own magnetic field, which interacts with the stator’s field to generate torque.
One of the key characteristics of an asynchronous motor is the concept of “slip,” referring to the difference between the synchronous speed of the magnetic field and the actual rotor speed. This slip is essential for producing torque. Asynchronous motors are favored for their rugged construction, reliability, and comparatively low cost. They also do not require brushes or a commutator, resulting in lower maintenance needs and longer operating life. These attributes make them a popular choice for various applications such as pumps, fans, conveyors, and industrial machinery.
